The Education Department has sought two centers in every district of the state to conduct Joint Entrance Exam (JEEMain), scheduled to be held on April 7 next year. Earlier, the state government had scrapped Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET) for admission in engineering courses to join the JEE-Main league.
“The state government, in a letter to CBSE, has sought 14 centres for JEE-Main in the state. For the online test, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Junagadh centres have been suggested. For the off line test, the state has demanded centres at Bhuj, Gandhinagar, Himmatnagar, Jamnagar, Anand, Valsad, Navsari and Godhra. Aspirants can appear for online as well as offline test at Ahmedabad,” said an Educational department official.
JEE-Main is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). About 1.2 lakh students appear for common entrance test in Gujarat. “About 8,000 to 10,000 seats in professional courses were vacant last year. JEE-Main will also help colleges fill seats from students outside the state,” he said.
The state education department has decided that equal weightage will be given to HSC (science) final score and the JEE score. Both the exams will be given 50 per cent weightage each in making the final merit list on the basis of which admissions to engineering and pharmacy courses will be granted.
The examination will be conducted in English, Hindi and Gujarati. Hence, the students in Gujarat can opt for language of their choice. JEE-Main will be on the same lines as AIEEE, where Physics, Chemistry and Maths will be tested in the same paper.
To get admission to IIT, the Central government and IIT Council have decided that students should finish among the first 1.50 lakh in the JEE-Main exam and should secure above 80 percentile in class 12th board exam. This signifies that these IIT aspirant students should be in the top 20 percentile of board exam. And only these students will be eligible to give IIT-Advance exam which is mandatory to get admissions to IIT.
