TEACHER HERE, STUDENT THERE

Violating AICTE norms, many self-financed colleges hire degree course teachers who are still studying for master’s; this affects quality of education Yogesh Avasthi Posted On Thursday, April 25, 2013 http://www.ahmedabadmirror.com/article/2/2013042520130425023815109793f38e2/TEACHER-HERE-STUDENT-THERE.html When Gujarat Technological University officials slapped a fine of Rs 35 lakh on a diploma engineering college a couple of days back, it was found to be just one of the many colleges which employed teachers who curiously are students in colleges in Jaipur. According to officials at GTU, 24 of the 35 teachers who were teaching diploma courses at that college in Rajkot were still pursuing ME. These teachers were disqualified and college was slapped with a fine of Rs 1 lakh per unerqualified teacher. Incidentally, a few colleges in Gujarat too violate the norms and allow such students to pursue ME without having to attend classes regularly. Senior academicians say around 40 per cent of

School draws up perfect game plan

The weekly physical education (PE) class was, and is, often used to complete homework assignments, take a nap, or practise for some performance or the other. No more. Sports will no longer take a backseat to academics — not at Sheth C N Vidyavihar, anyway. The Ambawadi-based school is the first school in the city to make a daily sports period compulsory for all of its roughly 3,500 students. With the coming academic year, students from senior kindergarten to Class 12 will have to spend an hour and a half every day playing games and sports. The school will charge an additional Rs 500 per half-yearly term a

A special Rs 10-cover depicting the educational philosophy of the school will be inaugurated on April 26. “We have organised a special event on April 26 which marks the end of our centenary year celebration. We will release a souvenir and also revamp our website on the day. But the biggest acknowledgement has come from the postal department which will unveil an envelop commemorating 100 years of our school,” said Sheth C N Vidyavihar Director T J Purani. It will be a 10X18 cm cover which will carry the symbol and a brief history of the prestigious school. A GESTURE OF GRATITUDE There was a post office on the school premi

Platform of despair

A’bad-Delhi Rajdhani Express now departs from platform 10 instead of 6 despite passengers complaining of unfinished paving work, loose wires, lack of refreshment stalls and inadequate seating arrangements Yogesh Avasthi Posted On Sunday, April 07, 2013  http://www.ahmedabadmirror.com/article/2/2013040720130407022337812937bf18b/Platform-of-despair.html The Ahmedabad-Delhi Swarna Jayanti Rajdhani Express has been departing from an under-construction platform for nearly a month now, much to the inconvenience of passengers. Since March 15, the train has been departing from platform 10 instead of platform 6, as the latter cannot accommodate trains with 19 coaches. But the Western Railway’s decision is clearly unpopular with passengers, who are miffed with the unsanitary conditions, loose wires, unfinished paving work, limestone spraying, lack of refreshment stalls and inadequate seating arrangements on platforms 10 and 11. Pulling luggage along the dusty platform is no walk in the par
