Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has decided on a traditional dress code for its first convocation being held at the LD Engineering College ground on January 19. The authorities have also decided to do away with the convocation cap, which has been an integral part of the convocation robe for several institutes.
“Knowing that it is our first convocation and would set a trend for the coming years, we decided to lay emphasis on our traditional values and culture and not on the robes which would remind us of colonial times,” said Dr Akshai Agrawal, Vice chancellor of GTU.

Off white code
For students it would be off white choodidaar pyjama and kurta, along with a scarf. While women will have an option of wearing an off white saree and a violet scarf. Dignitaries like chancellor, vice chancellor and the chief guest on the occasion will be offered to wear red gown and golden scarf.
Earlier it was proposed that the National Institute of Design (NID), would be roped in for deciding on the dress code, but when it could not work out, authorities gave the responsibility to LD textile technology department for dress designing and dress code.
“We carried a quick survey and thoroughly examined the photographs of convocation ceremonies of various leading institutes all over the country. After considering a number of suggestions about designs and colour combinations, we zeroed in on this combination, which will hopefully carry forward our culture,” said Prof Ashwin Thakkar, who heads LD textile technology department.
Around 7,000 students will be part of the convocation which has an impressive list of invitees. Besides Governor Kamla and Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the authorities will be sending an invitation to former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Ambani brothers, Sam Pitroda and N R Narayana Murthy.
