An envious teacher ruined the career of 19 computer science students of Gujarat Technological University (GTU), well almost.Jealous over her senior correcting answer scripts of GTU’s first semester exam, the teacher allegedly removed answer papers of 19 students. The tainted teacher, lacking enough experience to check papers, wilted under the threat of narco-analysis test and returned the answer scripts. She was asked to resign immediately. Ironically, both were buddies.
The melodrama fit for a mega serial was enacted at L J Institute of Engineering on SG Highway early this month. The answer scripts of the first semester exam conducted by GTU in December, 2008 were distributed among senior teachers of the varsity for correction. Each senior teacher, including the one at L J Institute of Engineering, were given 300 answer scripts. When the teacher accused of hiding the answer scripts came to know that her friend with seven years’ experience was correcting the semester papers, she started envying her. But she kept her jealousy under wraps and continued to be friendly with her senior.
The senior teacher kept the corrected papers in her locker in the college on January 1, 2009. But the next morning she was shocked to find of them missing. She minutely searched all the places to trace the papers. Her junior also helped her, but in vain.Finding to solution, the senior teacher divulged the incident to the principal, who informed GTU about the incident couple of days later. GTU officials rushed to the college on January 6 and asked the senior teacher to lodge a non-cognisable (NC) complaint at the Sarkhej police station immediately. After the complaint was registered, the college principal and GTU officials summoned all the teachers of the institute and threatened that if the papers were not recovered within half-an-hour, Forensic Science Laboratory would be asked conduct a probe, which would include narco-analysis test of every staff. The threat did the trick, and the junior teacher confessed to the principal that she had hidden the papers.
She also tabled the missing papers before the principal. The college authorities sought resignation from the junior teacher immediately after the confession. The police, completing the formalities, handed the missing papers over to GTU.Confirming the bizarre incident, GTU registrar N N Bhuptani said: “We had received a complaint about the missing papers, but they had been recovered.” The principal of L J Institute of Engineering College, however, said no such incident took place in the institute.
