Three persons have emerged as strong contenders to the post of Gujarat University vice chancellor. The present VC Parimal Trivedi’s term ends on June 24. Shashi Ranjan Yadav, VC of Kutch University; Dr Mukul Shah, pro-VC of Gujarat University and Manoj Soni, VC of Ambedkar University, are the front-runners for the top post in the largest university in the state.
A three-member committee has been formed to decide on the new vice chancellor. Senior lawyer Saurabh Amin has been appointed by the governor as chairman of the search committee. MSU VC Yogesh Singh is the second member, whose name as panel member was cleared by executive and academic council of GU, while the third member is Kamlesh Joshipura, VC of Saurashtra University appointed by the Joint Board of Vice Chancellors. The first meeting of the search panel was held on May 4, while the second meeting is expected in the last week of May.
As per sources, one of the likely contenders for the top post is Shashi Ranjan Yadav, whose proximity to the BJP well known. As chief of the party’s IT cell in the past, Yadav had leveraged IT tools to boost BJP’s election campaigns, which is expected to stand him in good stead, now. Moreover, he carries a clean image. Since it is election year, Yadav is seen as someone who can get the support of the youth for the BJP.
Dr Mukul Shah, pro-VC of Gujarat University, is another serious contender to the top post. Appointed as troubleshooter after Trivedi got embroiled in a series of controversies and was accused of corruption, Shah had brought about some order in the system. He, too, is considered close to the party.
Manoj Soni, VC of Ambedkar University, whose term expires with Trivedi, has in the past year and half got close to Modi, if sources are to be believed. There is a possibility that he will get a second term at Ambedkar varsity or he will be brought to Gujarat University.
Sources said, more than academics it is politics that will play a part in the appointments. So the chances of Yadav and Shah are brighter.
Other persons who have emerged as contenders for the post are R S Patel, director, school of psychology and social sciences. Patel is academically sound through his research work and politically well-connected.
Subhash Brahmbhatt, principal, H K College; Saurabh Chokshi, principal of J G International; Mahitpatsinh Chavda, principal of L D Arts; N D Shah, dean, commerce faculty, GU, are also said to be in the race.
