The sprawling Gujarat University campus, which till last year had nearly 500 peacocks, now has only about 150 left. The reason, according to university vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi, are stray dogs. Trivedi says peacocks are being hunted down by these dogs which have no other source of food on the campus.
The vice-chancellor has accused the AMC of not only turning a deaf ear to university’s repeated pleas to rid the campus of canine menace, but also of releasing here strays caught from other parts of the city. Fed up, the V-C has decided to address the issue with dogged determination and form a students’ squad to keep the predating canines out and save the peacocks.
“The campus has a vast green cover and is home to a large variety of birds. Till last year there were about 500 peacocks. Now, only about 150 remain,” Trivedi said, adding, “There are no residences inside the campus and dogs can barely get food. Hence, they target birds. Peachick are the most vulnerable ones.”
The vice-chancellor told AM that frequent calls to AMC to control the stray dog menance have been in vain. “AMC has only added to the woes. We have found that dogs caught from various areas are released on the campus. Trivedi puts the number of strays at over a hunded.
The students’ squad envisioned by the V-C will keep the campus “dog-free” and “bird-friendly”.
Ganji Chaudhary, superintendent of AMC’s cattle menace control department said, “Our teams have in the past caught dogs from the GU campus. The varsity’s accusations are baseless. The municipal body spends lakhs of rupees on canine menace every month.” Chaudhary promised to look into the matter and take necessary action.

We will now form a students’ squad to keep the campus dog-free
