Several passengers travelling by Indian railways will vouch that recovering baggages lost at stations is not only difficult, it is close to impossible. But that is a thing in the past. Recently, a senior citizen who reported a lost baggage on April 25 got it back within 48 hours, thanks to the dedication of railway officials.
Shankerlal Sompura and his family had taken a trip to Mathura, Haridwar and Delhi. While returning to Ahmedabad, the family boarded Delhi-Ahmedabad Swarna Jayanti Rajdhani Express at the New Delhi station on April 24. Before boarding the train, the Sompuras had to get their 17 pieces of baggage checked as per the security norms at the station.
“On April 25 we reached home. It is then that we realised that we had one bag less. Immediately, we went to Ahmedabad railway station and asked the railway officials and porters if they had seen the bag. But no one knew about it. Later, I realised that we might have left the bag at the New Delhi station,” said Sompura, a Naranpura resident.
Sompura searched for Delhi railway station’s number online and contacted the authorities. “The authorities at Delhi station told me that it would be extremely difficult to find a bag among several found daily at the station. But he asked me to fax him the details of the bag. Within two hours, I received a call from them informing me that the bag had been found. They asked me to send a person authorised by me to collect the bag. As I didn’t have anyone in Delhi, I requested them to send the bag with the TTE on Rajdhani express. The officials agreed.”
Later, officials from New Delhi station called Sompura to inform him that the bag was being sent with a TTE named Mishra. Sompura received his bag intact on April 27. “There was a camera and several other expensive items in the bag. None of them was damaged. The officials didn’t tell me their names but they were very helpful. I am thankful to them,” said Sompura.
