Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi proudly claims that the number of
research work at the university has increased during his tenure. “In the
past several months, the number of PhD and MPhil registrations have
gone up,” said Trivedi.
Despite his tall claims, the figures
released by GU senate presents a different picture. According to
university sources, the number of research students have gone down due
to GU’s policies and Trivedi’s interference. “He demands that every
applicant’s file should be shown to him. These files lie with him for a
long time and eventually get lost in the clutter. Now, researchers
prefer other universities rather than delay their PhDs and MPhils at
Gujarat University,” the sources said.
One of the syndicate members, Manish Doshi, said, “Claims made by Parimal Trivedi that the research works have increased during his tenure are false. The fact is that students are so disheartened by the time consumed to get their PhD registered that their number has dwindled alarmingly. Compilation of their thesis doesn’t take as much time as getting it registered.”
A PhD student, who didn’t wish to be named, said, “I submitted my thesis. However, I haven’t received the submission report. The register at the research cell shows that the report was made. But they are unable to locate it. I have spoken to the department head and the vice chancellor. But they don’t give me any direct answers. They keep deferring the matter and ask me to come back at a later date. It is very frustrating. It is affecting my career too. The PhD will help me get a promotion in my job.”
Reacting to this, Trivedi said, “I admit we didn’t have proper guides. Around 450 students had to suffer because of this anomaly. But now, all that is resolved.”
The dwindling number of research students have not gone unnoticed by the higher education department. They have also taken note of the problems students have to undergo to get their research registered.
The numbers released by syndicate members show that in 2010-2011, only 164 MPhil students have registered with GU compared to 273 students in 2009-2010. Same is the case with PhD students. In 2010-11, 57 students have registered with GU compared to 149 in 2009-10.
Doshi said, “If the situation has to improve, university will have to change its policies. It will have to put a researcher or someone knowledgeable in-charge of the research cell. This will help encourage more students to do research at Gujarat University.
