Gujarat Technological University (GTU) plans to upload scanned copies of degree certificates and final year marksheets of students on its website, so that the firms hiring them can verify the genuineness of the documents at the touch of a button. This will also discourage people from tampering with the documents. It will even cut down on the time taken by recruiters and varsities to complete the verification process which usually takes two to three months.
GTU will conduct its first convocation around December. Nearly 4,500 MBA students of the first batch will be awarded degree certificates during the ceremony. These certificates will have security features to make them tamper-proof. The documents will bear a security code which when entered on the GTU website will help firms/varsities access the same online.
Vice Chancellor Dr Akshai Aggarwal said, “We are doing our best to ensure it becomes impossible for anyone to defraud recruiters by forging GTU marksheets and other documents. The degree certificates will have security features that will make them tamper-proof. They will also have a security code, using which firms can check the same documents online.”

NO DELAY
Currently, the verification process takes a lot of time particularly because most universities have to conduct a manual check, which is a tedious process, before sending their reply to the recruiters. It is only after the recruiters receive a favourable reply from the varsities that they issue appointment letters to the candidates. GTU aims to cut down on this delay by uploading the documents online, thus benefiting both students and recruiters.
Talks are on with two companies for creating tamper-proof certificates with security features. These degree certificates and marksheets will bear the web address where their scanned copies have been put up.

Documents to remain online
It comes as a blessing for GTU students who will be going abroad for work or further studies as the verification process will take very little time. So firms can issue their appointment letters and varsities, their admission letters without delay. Also, the documents will remain on the website and new certificates will be added every year,” Dr Aggarwal added.
In 2009, LD Arts College received a forged TY BA marksheet by a Mumbai company for verification. In less than three months it received the same marksheet from another Mumbai company for verification, after which the college authorities alerted Gujarat University. GTU’s online access to student’s credentials will help firms check frauds faster and alert the university too, if they come across any.
