The final of the Gujarat Quiz is likely to be a grand affair with either Big B or Narendra Modi likely to host the event. The function will be held in the last week of April or the first week of May to coincide with the ending of Swarnim Gujarat year. The final will be held at Town Hall where the Education Department plans to create a set similar to the one on Kaun Banegi Crorepati.
Highly placed sources said, “Amitabh Bachchan is Gujarat’s tourism ambassador. He is also the face of KBC. So, we are trying to rope him to be the quizmaster for our grand finale. The chief minister will be present at the event. If Big B does not agree, Modi will do the honours. The CM is popular among youngsters and this is his dream project. It will be an opportunity for him to get in touch with Gujarat’s youth.”
The government has already got in touch with TV channels and radio channels to promote the event. The function will be webcast live, too. The quiz, which was launched on December 28, is likely to be an annual affair. With 65 lakh students from class V to class XII participating in the quiz, it is one of the biggest quiz events conducted in the world. The event has been extended to colleges and Non-Resident Gujaratis (NRGs), too.
“The quiz has been thrown open to all —young and old — outside Gujarat and outside the country. We have a bank of more than 2 crore emails belonging to NRIs and NRGs. They will be mailed the details and link to the online quiz. This game will be played from the second week of February to third week of April. The winner will participate in the final held here. The same procedure will be followed for people staying outside the state,” said a source.
The quiz focuses solely on Gujarat. The aim is to spread awareness about the state. “Forget people outside, even those who live here have little idea about Gujarat, its culture and heritage. So with outside help, the department prepared a bank of 5,000 questions in Gujarati, Hindi, Sanskrit and English. These are posted on website www.gujaratquiz.in. The question bank can be downloaded. It has also been distributed in schools and colleges in the form of booklets,” a source said.
The winners stand to walk away with scholarships and other awards. The quiz is being conducted progressively from class-level within schools to state-level. Class-level test winners will go for school-level contest. The winners will then take the district-level test to get selected for the state-level competition. Each team comprises a boy and a girl.
