This Diwali, Rajdhani Express is targeting flyers with its zero-waiting list concept. Extra coaches are being added to accommodate maximum number of passengers, who in case of non-availability of berths, are forced to travel by air.
Ahmedabad-Delhi Rajdhani Express, which has 14 coaches in the lean period, is running at maximum carriage capacity of 18 coaches to cater to the festive-season rush.
For the past four days, first and second AC coaches of the daily train have seen zero waiting lists by accommodating over 300 extra passengers daily.
Extra coaches are added only if the waiting list runs into triple digits.
In the past three months, Rajdhani Express has added a total of four first AC bogies, 15 second AC bogies, and 29 third AC coaches to clear the rush.
The ticket cost for first AC coach is Rs 2,660, for second AC Rs 1,595 and for third AC Rs 1,210. Adding extra coaches to Rajdhani Express benefits passengers, who otherwise would have to shell out between Rs 9,800 and Rs 12,000 on an air ticket. The concept of zero-waiting list is a tad too difficult to implement in all the trains, particularly those that also have non-AC coaches. Most of these trains have already added extra coaches and are running at their maximum carriage capacity of 24 bogies. Despite this, the waiting list is too long. So, the railways have introduced more trains to handle the holiday rush.
This year, 262 holiday trains have been introduced to cater to passenger rush in the months of September, October and November. Last year, 182 holiday trains were introduced in the corresponding period.
In the last 10 days, passenger trains departing from Ahmedabad station have accommodated 9,627 extra passengers in 149 extra coaches in different trains. Last year, only 67 coaches were added.
Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud said: “We are trying to ease passenger traffic by clearing waiting lists as much as we can. Till November 15, trains to north and south will see lot of rush because of Diwali vacation and Chhat. To cater to the rush, we have been adding extra coaches to the trains as and when required. We are also monitoring the daily traffic so that we know whether new trains need to be introduced on the route. Rajdhani Express has been running with zero waiting list for the past four days.”
Western Railway is running Rajdhani Type AC Superfast bi-weekly winter special train between Mumbai Central and New Delhi till November 29. The train, that will have first, second and third AC coaches will halt at Borivali, Surat, Vadodara, Ratlam, Kota and Mathura.
