Officials of MG Science Institute have asked the police to increase patrolling near the college during daytime to prevent harassment of female students. In the past 10 days, many incidents of teasing have taken place near the college, which is located on a sprawling campus with cricket grounds opposite Gujarat University (GU).
Recently, a student hailing from a north-eastern state faced offensive remarks from a group of rowdy bikers. One of them, in fact, stopped her and gave her a ‘gift’. The incident left the girl completely shaken. She apparently didn’t attend college for a few days. There have also been instances when some youths drove their motorcycles very close to girl students on foot in a bid to touch them.
College authorities say youths who visit the campus to watch cricket matches or while away time are behind such incidents of harassment. The principal of MG Science, B K Jain, said that he, along with other staff members, approached the GU police on Friday after they learnt that some ‘outsiders’ leered and passed comments at another girl student.
“We held an emergency staff meeting yesterday (Friday) to discuss the issue. We even filed a complaint in the GU police station, where officers assured us that they would keep a watch near the campus,” he said. Jain said that students had been asked to note down registration numbers of unruly bikers. “We will pass on these numbers to the police,” he said.
