The Western Railway commissioned a new broad gauge on Friday. This brings good news for lakhs of passengers who get stuck between Sabarmati and Kalupur railway stations, waiting for a green signal. The first train to travel along the track was Okha-Guwahati Express which left Kalupur station at 9.15 pm.
Several railway officials were present at the commissioning.
The four-km stretch from Kalupur to Sabarmati had two broad gauge tracks and one metre gauge track. WR added a broad gauge track for smoother flow of rail traffic. Over 120 trains from Delhi, Rajasthan, Kandla Port and Saurashtra runs along this stretch. More than 3 lakh passengers travel along this route every day.
The 4-km stretch includes the railway bridge parallel to Subhash Bridge. Here, we integrated the broad gauge with the existing metre gauge due to space crunch.”
Had the Railway authorities thought of creating a new broad gauge track, they would have had to construct a new rail bridge.
He added, “The new track has boosted connectivity to the port. There is a double track to handle traffic from Viramgam and Gandhidham.”
Till now, trains from these stations had to wait for the line to clear before they were allowed passage to Ahmedabad. The delay could last from 10 minutes to 40 minutes. This was troublesome for passengers, many of whom would then prefer to get down at Sabarmati railway station.
Garud said, “Manning traffic was a headache. The new tracks will help goods trains to move faster Detention of good trains led to loss in crores over a year. The new track, therefore, will cut down our losses.”
