Tata’s first attempt to lap up talented professionals from Gujarat failed to evoke overwhelming response from aspirants. But the scene was different at Saurabh High School in Nava Wadaj on Tuesday. More than 150 job seekers queued up at the school to take the test, held to fill up 4000 vacancies at Tata Motors’ Sanand plant.
However, of the 150 candidates, only 45 could fulfill the company’s criteria. Most of the students, who appeared for the test, are class XII pass-out, awaiting engineering admissions to begin in the state.
“It will be great if I get selected. You get training and get paid too. Isn’t it exciting?” said Kajal Patel who cleared her class XII board examination this year. She has applied for BE programme also at various college.
Like Kajal, Mohammad Farooq, too, is keen to take up Tata’s job instead of studying engineering. “Who does not want to earn? I will prefer this job. At college, I will get only a degree. This job will provide practical knowledge and money, too. One will be trained according to industrial need. Future seems bright here,” Farooq said.
All those who took HSC Science and Commerce examinations this year or cleared them with at least 40 per cent marks in 2009 will be eligible for the three-year training programme. The idea of roping in HSC pass-outs from science and commerce streams is to create industry-specific trained manpower. Tata Motors has offered a stipend of Rs 4,000 in the first year, Rs 4,500 in the second year and Rs 5,000 in the third.
The 60-mark written tests were scheduled to be held from June 6 to 24. Expecting more than 500 students every day, the District Education Office (DEO) had ordered several city schools to keep their classrooms free to conduct the tests.
