Gandhidham-Howrah weekly train named Garba Express

Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee is known for her whimsical ways of doing things. But Didi’s fanciful thoughts made Gujarat proud on Saturday. Impressed with a traditional Gujarati dance performance of tiny tots at the inaugural function of an auto hub at Shalimar in West Bengal, she named Howrah-Gandhidham-Howrah superfast train Garba Express.
Before flagging off the promised train from Howrah on Saturday evening, she went to Shalimar, around 10 km off Howrah, to unveil the auto hub. Impressed by the kids’ dance show before its inauguration, she sought their suggestions on the name of the Gandhidham-Howrah train. When the kids told her to name it Kutch Express, she expressed her inability to do so because a train existed in that name.
In no mood to dishearten the tiny tots, Banerjee asked them the name of the dance form they performed. When they told her they performed Garba, a traditional dance form that marks Navratri celebrations in Gujarat, she announced the train would be named Garba Express.
Later, Banerjee flagged off the weekly Howrah-Gandhidham-Howrah superfast train announcing that its name would be Garba Express. The train will chug into Ahmedabad on Monday. Its maiden return trip from Gandhidham to Howrah will be on this Saturday.
Though inaugurated on a Saturday, Garba Express (2938) will depart from Howrah on regular basis on Mondays at 11 pm. It will arrive in Ahmedabad on Wednesday at 11 am. The train will reach Gandhidham at 5.05 pm the same day.
The Garba Express (2937) will leave Gandhidham on Saturdays at 5 pm and reach Ahmedabad the same night at 11. After 25 minutes’ halt, it will leave for Howrah. It will reach the terminal station on Monday at 1 pm. Though Banerjee had promised in her budget speech to inaugurate the Howrah-Gandhidham express train by March 10, she failed to meet her deadline due to shortage of rakes. AM had reported it.
