Third run of country-wide exhibition-on-wheels begins from Capital for the first time

Science Express, an exhibition train that will travel the length and breadth of the country, will be flagged off in Gandhinagar on October 2. This is not Science Express’ first-ever run, it’s the third, but it is for the first time that the train will start from Gandhinagar and then proceed to the rest of the country. The earlier two trains started at Delhi.
The 16-coach train, a virtual exhibition-on-wheels, will be flagged off by the CM or the Governor on Gandhi Jayanti. An initiative of Union ministry of science and technology, it the first Science Express was launched in 2007 with the aim of spreading scientific enquiry among people. In its third run, the Science Express will make 55 stops along a 18,000 km route across the country. Each stop being two-three days long. The train will avoid halts at places it has stopped previously.
In city from October 16 to 20
The train will remain stationed at Gandhinagar station for the first fortnight — October 2 to 15 - after while it will reach Ahmedabad and halt there between October 16 and 20. Other halts in the state include Anand, Valsad, Jamnagar and Gandhidham. Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Centre (CSC) will organise and manage the exhibition this time, said its executive director Dilip Surkar. The Express will then move into Maharashtra, from where it will proceed to South and eventually the entire country.
All 16 coaches will house an exhibition each ranging from astronomy, biology, physics, technology etc. The additions in the third run are a coach on climate change and a programme on ‘Career in Science’. Arrangements are being made to put up exhibits and posters on station platforms too to enable students and parents standing in queue to spend gaining valuable information, said CSC administrative officer Bhaskar Shukla.
12 lakh to visit exhibition
The slogan for Science Express this time is ‘Science for Peace’, said Union ministry officials. The train has traversed a total of 32,000 km in its two earlier trips and stopped at 160 towns and cities. Officials said about 35 lakh people, mainly children, have visited the exhibition in the last two years, with 20,000 students actually conducting experiments aboard the train.
In the latest trip, 12 lakh people are expected to benefit from the exhibition on wheels. The climate change exhibition is currently being assembled on Science Express at Gandhinagar station, said CSC science educator Megha Saklani. The exhibits, which until now were German-made, are being replaced by indigenously developed ones.
