The swanky Sabarmati Railway Station developed at the cost of Rs 1 crore by the Ahmedabad railway division may have missed out on a central terminus status. Now, there is good news for the people residing in the western part of the city.
Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud told Mirror that they have sent a proposal to the railway board requesting them to allow five new trains that currently stop at Ahmedabad Railway Station to also stop at Sabarmati Railway Station.
These trains are Rajdhani Express, Ranakpur Express, Porbandar-Motiyari Express, Pune-Jodhpur Express and Jammu Tavi Express. The proposal is likely to get the railway board’s nod by October, Garud said. These trains will have a two to five minutes stopover. Right now, trains travelling to north India — Haridwar Express, Ashram Express and Aravalli Express — pass through Sabarmati station. Now, with the new proposal, people travelling to places like Delhi, Rajasthan and Punjab can board the trains at Sabarmati instead of Kalupur.
The Ahmedabad division has for long wanted to replace Kalupur station with the Sabarmati station as the terminus for the city with a view to making it accessible for citizens living in the western part.
The railway board had rejected the proposal thrice in the past saying the cost involved, Rs 30 crore, was too high for a project involving a single station. But now with this new proposal, the traffic congestion at Ahmedabad station is bound to ease. “Right now Ahmedabad station sees a lot of traffic. And hence the new proposal seeking stopover of four more trains. Besides this, we also plan to seek the termination of Haridwar Express and Ashram Express at Sabarmati station instead of Ahmedabad station. This, however, will be done only after a public survey,” Garud said.
With the 132-ft Ring Road coming up, Sabarmati station has become more accessible to people of the western part. “And now, with the BRTS all set to be introduced, it will be more convenient for people,” he said.
