A month before NSUI went on a rampage at SNDT University’s centre in the city, alleging malpractice by the incharge Saudamini Menon, the organisation’s president Bhautik Vijaybhai Bhatt had written a letter to the Maharashtra governor seeking action against her and two others including university vice chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy.
But instead of acting upon it, C M Alegaon, the joint secretary to the governor, forwarded the same letter (dated June 9, 2009) to the SNDT vice chancellor seeking action against the latter, Menon and the director of the city-based centre.
The bizarre move by the joint secretary asking the official who has been accused of malpractice to take an action in the matter, has angered NSUI further.
On Monday, the students led by National Students’ Union of India went on a rampage at SNDT University’s centre in Maninagar on Monday, protesting its announcement for admission after National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) cancelled SNDT’s recognition.
According to official sources, the agitating members alleged that SNDT was trying to cheat students by announcing admissions even after its recognition was cancelled.
In his letter, Bhatt alleged that Menon and her colleagues had committed irregularities during the April 2009 B Ed examination and had even leaked out the question paper. Bhatt alleged that the director of the centre, Dr Madhuri Chheda, had demanded Rs 10,000 from every student who was not enrolled for the B Ed course at the centre but wanted admission.
Menon had even issued hall tickets to these students despite they not being granted admission by the admission committee of the university, he said. Reacting to the issue, Menon said, “The allegations are false and baseless. We have always followed the protocol. We have also submitted a clarification to the SNDT vice chancellor.”
