Two young boys from Kutch were in for a rude shock on Friday when they realised 15 days after regularly attending their lectures at H K Commerce College that they were nowhere on the list of the admitted candidates in the FY BCom section. All this despite having reportedly scored more than 70 per cent marks — HK Commerce cut-off was 69 per cent— and even having allegedly paid Rs 10,000 to a local ‘student leader’ to ensure their admissions are taken care of.
Worse, the two students, Nilesh Parasan and Anil Vidoriya, did not even fill up admission forms thinking even that would be done by the ‘student leader’! According to a college source, “The cut-off percentage for Gujarati medium Commerce was 55, for Gujarati medium students shifting to English medium it was 69 per cent and for English medium students it was 56. The students had scored high marks and could have easily got into the first merit list had they just filled up the forms.”
The students were unsure whether it was possible for them to get into a good college given the stiff competition. Desperate to get into a reputed college, they tried ‘other means’ and got introduced to a person who identified himself as student leader Bhavesh Patel. He demanded Rs 10,000 each from them for doing the ‘setting’ and getting their admission formalities done. Two days later, he even told them everything was done as required and their fees too had been paid.
On Friday afternoon, H K College authorities conducted surprise check of students’ ID cards and fee receipts at the entrance of the college. The head of the security cell, R D Singh, caught hold of Nilesh and Anil when they said they were not issued an I-Card or fee receipt despite having procured admissions. They narrated their ordeal to the principal of the college Gopal Bhatt and even told him they had not filled up the forms. The principal even tried contacting Patel on his landline number given by the duo, but could not get through.
Bhatt said, “No person from the college is involved in whatever has happened, if at all it has. All the alleged dealings have taken place outside this institution. Also, the two students had not even filled up their admission forms. We cannot help them in any manner.”
