Ready to enrol in an institution of repute miles away from Ahmedabad for graduation? Think twice before dumping city colleges for studying in Metro cities. For, the colleges of Apnu Amdavad are among the best in business.
Believe it or not, St Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad, is ranked ninth in the country in the top 10 science colleges’ list. Not just that. Quite a few city institutes have found an entry in an annual nation-wide survey of the best colleges. BJ Medical College has been ranked 13th. Last year, it was placed 21st.
In the survey conducted by India Today, the college rankings were based on reputation, quality of academic input, student care, infrastructure and job prospects of passouts.
City institutes like HK Commerce College, HK Arts College, Faculty of Law Gujarat University, CU Shah Arts College, Bhavan’s RA Shah College of Arts & Commerce and Nirma Institute of Technology are maiden entrants in the top 50 list.
The teachers and students of the institutes like HK Commerce College and CU Shah Arts College, which figured in the prestigious list for the first time, are on cloud nine.
The principal of CU Shah Arts College, Dr Sanjay Vakil, said: “Figuring in the list of top 50 institutions is an honour for us. Besides academics, we concentrate on the career of students. We have an exclusive placement cell. Monthly tests are conducted to evaluate students, while pupils take initiative to host special seminars.”
HK Commerce College principal Dr Gopal Bhatt said: “We have been concentrating on the quality of education for the past few years. It has paid dividends. In a bid to ensure our students excel at work places, we run special courses on English, personality development and computer skills. Our prime target is ensuring placements to our students.”
Cut to the science colleges in the city. Besides St Xavier’s College, MG Science Institute finds a place in the top 50 list of science institutions at number 38.
The survey also lists Ahmedabad’s top five science colleges. They are St Xavier’s, MG Science Institute, Bhavan’s RA Shah College of Science, KK Shah Jarodwala College and CU Shah Science College.
HK Commerce College is the best ranked institute from Ahmedabad, at number 33, among the commerce colleges. Bhavan’s RA Shah College of Arts & Commerce is the next best at 44.
In the city list, third, fourth and fifth positions have been clinched by HL Institute of Commerce, HA College of Commerce and CU Shah City Commerce College.
There was a bit of a drop in the arts stream, though. St Xavier’s College, which was ranked 12th last year, dropped a spot. However, the top 50 list saw two new entrants from Ahmedabad. They are HK Arts College and CU Shah Arts College.Gujarat University’s Faculty of Law is the new entrant at number 25 in the all time list, while Nirma Institute of Technology debuts at number 25 in the best engineering colleges’ list.
