Groundwork for the proposed Ahmedabad University has begun in earnest. With the site for the new university near Vijay crossroad identified, the Ahmedabad Education Society (AES) is arranging the funds for an expansive building to house its various departments. The AES plans to raise funds by selling off six large parcels of prime land it owns at three locations in the city.

The education society has applied for permission from the Charity Commissioner to sell the land — a rule binding purchase or sale of any trust property. The approval may take two-three months. The trust’s six plots are located on Drive-in Road, Vastrapur and Bodakdev. Each is approximately 30-40 acres in size, making them irresistible acquisitions for major real estate firms. The six plots are expected to fetch at least Rs 100 crore.
Ahmedabad University currently functions from HL campusThe AES plans to build a sprawling campus for Ahmedabad University on its 95-acre land near Vijay crossroad. There is provision for a separate building for each course the varsity runs, several hostel blocks and large open spaces, AES secretary S N Shah said. Currently, a part of the plot houses two boys hostels, which will be shifted to another location to make for the university campus. Sources said noted architect Vimal Patel has been entrusted the task of designing the complex.
Sources said a search committee has been set up to identify the right candidate for the Vice Chancellor’s posts. However, a decision would be taken only after the state Assembly gives a nod to the new university proposal.
The AES trust is credited with enabling the setting up of almost all higher education institutions in the city, including Gujarat University and LD Engineering College. Many decades ago, trust founder Kasturbhai Lalbhai donated land which house these two premier centres of learning. Besides, AES owns a number of college in the city — MG Science college, LD Arts college, HL Commerce college, AG high school etc.
