In a bid to create AIDS awareness among commuters, the Ahmedabad Railway Division has decided to install condom vending machines at important railway stations under its jurisdiction. In the first phase, the gizmos would be set up at nine stations, including Ahmedabad, in May.
Besides Ahmedabad, the condom vending machines will be installed at Maninagar, Sabarmati, Bhuj, Gandhidham, Viramgam, Mehsana, Palanpur and Kalol. Each platform at these stations would be fitted with two machines. The waiting halls at these stations will also have the gizmos. The Hindusthan Latex Limited will maintain the vending machines. Some people are still sheepish to buy contraceptives from shops. “After the installation of the vending machines at the stations, condoms will be available easily on the railway premises. We think it will help control AIDS to a considerable extent,” said Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Udayshankar Jha.
The idea of installing the condom vending machines at railway stations was proposed by the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) to create Aids awareness among people. Earlier, several NGOs kept condoms in toilets of trains to prevent AIDS, but the drive failed to draw much attention.Condom vending machines were also installed at several places in Ahmedabad, but the contraceptives are not available in most of them now due to lack of maintenance.
