The suspension of Upasana Thakore, a class VII student of Mount Carmel School, was revoked on Friday evening. Upasana was suspended from school following a fracas over she skipping her second mid-term exam to take part in the girls’ under-14 national basketball event.

The letter revoking the suspension was delivered to Upasana’s residence by a school peon at 8.30 pm on Friday. Signed by principal Priscilla Lobo, it stated: “Without prejudice to rights and contentions for suspending your daughter for the reasons mentioned in the (suspension) letter, in the interest of your daughter’s academic career, we are hereby permitting her to attend all normal school activities from Monday, 02/02/09.”

It goes on: “Please note that our rules do not entitle us to take a retest of any student for any reason whatsoever, including grave illness for a long period of time.... We can assure that your daughter is most welcome, as she has been for all these years to continue her academic pursuits in our school and she will be treated at par with all other students, which is how it has been for all these years.” The letter’s arrival lifted spirits in the Thakore household.

Upasana was glad to be going back to school, while her mother Nirmala was happy that the struggle is finally over. “I have seen a smile blossoming on Upasana’s lips after such a long time. We are taking this letter as a positive step. I am glad that my daughter will be in school by Monday,” she said, adding: “We will show this letter to our lawyer to ensure there are no legal hassles later.”The reporter could not contact the principal despite repeated attempts.
