Students of the Gujarat University, it seems, face an uninsured future once againThe Gujarat University (GU) students would miss out on the benefits of the insurance cover this fiscal if they meet with an accident as the laggard state government and varsity authorities failed to take initiatives to renew the scheme, which expired on March 31, 2008. The state government brought 3,86,000 GU students under the umbrella of accident insurance scheme of New India Insurance Company last fiscal. But a year on, neither the varsity officials nor the state government authorities recalled that it had to be renewed. The slip has disappointed the varsity students. “If we meet with any accident now, we will not be entitled to insurance benefits,” said a GU student on the guarantee of anonymity. GU vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi said: “The state government introduced the insurance scheme. Only GU students were brought under the insurance umbrella. The scheme expired on March 31, 2008, but we are trying to renew it for the benefit of the students. Even as the insurance companies have changed their terms and conditions after the terrorist attack in Mumbai I will try to renew the scheme as soon as possible.”The state government would also end up on the losing side if it wants to renew the insurance scheme for the varsity students now. “It will have to pay more to renew the scheme. Had the policy been continued with, the premium would have been less,” said an insurance company official.
