Pulled up for smoking, engg students accuse teacher of ragging
14 students of Om Engineering College in Junagadh called up anti-ragging helpline after being scolded; apologise later

There was uproar in Gujarat Technical University after a few students of Om Engineering College in Junagadh accused their HoD of ragging them and called up the varsity’s anti-ragging helpline number. According to sources, 14 students of first year Bachelor of Technology (Civil, Mechanical and Electrical streams) felt they were being harassed by HoD Brijesh Garala after he pulled them up for smoking.
The matter came to light after the varsity, the college, and the area’s police officer were informed of the students’ complaint by the anti-ragging cell. According to sources, these students had gone out for a smoke on March 12. “When they returned to the common room, Garala smelt cigarette fumes and pulled them up for smoking during college hours. He asked them to get their parents to college the next day failing which they would not be allowed to attend their classes.
The students claimed that only a couple of students had smoked.” But when Garala didn’t relent, the students called up the anti-ragging helpline 1800 180 5522 and complained against Garala. The complaint was forwarded to the college’s principal, respective police officer and VC of Gujarat Technological University. However, Director and Principal of the college Dr H M Nimbark told Mirror, “This is not a case of ragging.
We looked into the students’ complaint and found that it was a case of misunderstanding. The teacher had reprimanded the students. But the students mistook this as harassment. The matter has been sorted. Students have given in writing that the whole complaint was just a misunderstanding. This letter has been forwarded to police, GTU and UGC. Matter stands resolved.”
