Next time you are travelling on an unreserved ticket, you won’t have to dole out extra money to get a seat on the train. To ensure this, Ahmedabad’s Railway Protection Force has started numbering the tickets of passengers waiting in the queue near the general compartment. “The passenger will be seated according to these numbers, thus ascertaining that touts and coolies are not able to make money by illegally blocking the seats and selling them to passengers,” a railway official said. The official further added,
“Daily, thousands of people travel to various destinations on unreserved tickets. There have been complaints that the seats in the general compartments are blocked by the touts or the coolies who charge the passengers Rs 50 or Rs 100 for the seats. People who can afford to pay get a seat while the other passengers have to complete their journey in discomfort. To eliminate this nuisance, we have started a new numbering system through which seats will be allotted.”

WILL USE DIFFERENT COLOUR PEN
Giving details of the new system, RPF Senior Inspector (Ahmedabad) Sanjay Chaudhary said, “Under the new system, the tickets will be numbered while passengers are waiting to board the train near the general compartment. If the person is travelling with companions, the number will be specified on the ticket (eg: + 2 if the person is accompanied by two other passengers). This will ensure that passengers get seats fair and square.”
Chaudhary further said that the officials use different colour pens on different days to number the tickets. “We do not repeat the colour on successive days. The new system also allows us to maintain good queue management. Previously, people would stand in a queue but as soon as the coach doors were open, they would rush in. The new system ensures that passengers sit according to the number issued.”

PASSENGERS HAPPY
A passenger Harendra Chauhan, 40, said, “This new system is a lot more organized compared to the previous one. People are made to sit as per the number. This is easier for us passengers, who don’t have to fight for space. Earlier, people would rush in to grab their seats and in the rush several passengers would get hurt. Recently, I travelled to Mumbai and found the ‘token’ system efficient.” The new method is being tried in trains like Sabarmati Express, Ashram Express, and Delhi Mail. The RPF will keep a log of the seating arrangement which will help them review the system.
