Meritorious students in final year at Gujarat Technological University will now be able to study subjects of their liking. Usually, students have to take up a post-graduation course to specialise in aspecific stream, but this new structure will allow bright students to specialise in their area of interest at undergraduate level. “This will be applicable to courses like BE (degree and diploma), MBA, MCA and Pharmacy,” said GTU Vice- Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal.
In place of electives, students can choose a new subject by combining portions from various streams. “The method will raise their creativity and impart flexibility,” said a GTU official. This option is available only to those students who have no exam backlog.
“In the first week of a semester, the student will have to put his proposal before the head of the department. The HOD will set up a three-member commitee, including the dean or his nominee. This committee will evaluate the student’s capacity to study the subject on his/her own and whether the subject selected by him is equivalent to the elective course he wants to replace,” said the official.
If the proposal is accepted, the HOD will appoint a faculty member to supervise and monitor the student’s studies. The information about the accepted proposal and the faculty supervisor will be conveyed to the university (exam and academic section) by the second week, the official added. Student will need to update the supervisor about developments in studies on a weekly basis.
Besides, he would have to regularly upload his work on the university’s website. The marking scheme for self-study will be the same as the elective it replaces. The supervisor will check the student’s work. The university will appoint an examiner to conduct the semester exam. The exam will include written, viva and practical if applicable.
