A 49-year-old Manekbaug resident’s vigilance and honesty has helped a bank return Rs 35,000 to the rightful owners. Satish Zaveri (49) stumbled on two bundles of 1,000 denominations when he was operating his locker at the Central Bank of India, Bhudarpura branch. Rather than pocket the money, he informed the bank manager and ensured the amount was returned to Pravin Shah (77) and wife Chandra (75).
Felicitated by the bank on Wednesday, Zaveri, who owns a jewellery store, said, “On November 22, I had come to the bank with my wife Jayshree (45) to operate a locker. Since the locker is at a height, we dragged the ladder when a bundle tumbled down. We found two bundles of notes of 1000 denomination, around Rs 35,000. We handed over the bundles of money to the branch’s chief manager Manochit Malik.” But Zaveri’s concern did not end there. “I requested Malik to ensure the money is handed over to the owner after investigation and urged him to inform me when the owner has been traced,” he said.
And the bank did not let him down. CCTV footage revealed the cash belonged to retired civil engineer Pravin Shah (77) and his wife Chandra (75). The elderly couple was informed and handed over the money on Wednesday. “Chandra had forgotten to keep the cash inside the locker and neither of us realised it. We came to know about the misplaced cash on Monday, when a peon from the bank asked us to visit the bank where the chief manager informed us about what had happened,” Shah said.
Praising Zaveri, Shah added, “Not only did he return the cash, he ensured the money was returned to the rightful owner. I also appreciate the bank’s diligence in the matter.” Chief manager Malik confirmed the incident stating, “A senior citizen customer had left some money in the bank’s locker room. She was handed back the amount due to the honesty of a couple and alertness of the bank. The bank has honoured the honest couple.”
