Gujarat Technological University Innovation Council (GTUIC) has launched a massive movement to plug loopholes in the field of innovations carried out by students. The effort of the varsity to record all possible innovations, along with patents, is aimed at checking the replication.
“Previously, students would just work on their innovations without knowing if any research was done on the subject. After working hard for two-three years, students would often discover that their innovations already exist. This is not just waste of time but also leads to frustration.
GTUIC’s initiatives help students check the authenticity of their research topics and innovations,” said aGTU source. The university has received nearly 1.5 lakh patent search and analysis reports from registered final year students in three months, from August to October.
GTU has been able to provide a conducive atmosphere to promote research and innovation on its campus, though fund scarcity is an issue

‘IT HELPS SAVE PRECIOUS TIME’
The council provides all help to engineering students to crosscheck facts about their possible patents. “The idea is to prevent replication of innovations. The colleges make an in-depth study and check the authenticity of the innovations. After the scrutiny, 1.5 lakh patents search and analysis reports have been uploaded.
“This saves students’ precious time. It also provides them proper directions. What can be done other than what has already been researched upon? The companies were getting benefitted earlier, too, but they were not getting the latest innovations. It used to be a setback for students in case of replication of innovation. The system rules out the possibility of duplication ,” said GTU Vice-Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal.
“Our students have extensively studied the patents filed by Indian Patent Office, US Patent Office and European Patent Office related to their industry defined and user defined projects. The students also get to know about similar technologies available or technologies which are under development across the globe,” said a varsity official.

PVT COLLEGES’ PERFORMANCE
The faculty at colleges, mentors and Intellectual Property Rights team of GTUIC have played a vital role in the process. Interestingly, the performance of private engineering colleges has been better than that of government colleges, though the latter has access to better infrastructure.
GTU has been able to provide a conducive atmosphere to promote research and innovation on campus, fund scarcity has hit hard innovators who cannot afford to pay the fee of patent filling. Despite the best of the efforts of GTU, several students have not been able to register their patents as they can’t bear the cost of filing and there is no funding agency to save them from the situation.
