Failure is hard to accept. It is even harder when one believes that one has been wrongly thwarted. So is the case with 109 students studying architecture at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Technology (SVPIT) in Vasad who believe they have been wrongly given ATKT (Allowed to keep term) in their second year examination. These students have written a letter to the Gujarat University regarding the matter and also plan to meet vice-chancellor on Monday.
The students alleged bias in checking of papers. “We have received ATKT in our third semester which was held in November 2012. The results were announced on March 21. We suspect some of the teachers are biased and hence we were failed,” a student said on condition of anonymity. Faculty members of the students are also surprised at the result. They claim the failed students had performed really well in their internal examination and the pass result was 99 per cent.

NO TIME TO STUDY
Of the 109 students, 42 have ATKT one subject, 45 in two subjects while 22 students have been detained as they failed in more than 2 subjects. Students claim they have already prepared for the fourth semester examination. “Now, we will have to study for the third semester too.
There is not enough time to prepare for the examination because the results were announced so late,” claimed a student. Most of the students have failed in two papers – System and Construction. Students who claim to have done very well in these papers are at a loss as to how they could have failed.
SVPIT Principal Hemant Parmar said, “This entire issue is highly unfortunate. Students and faculty members are upset by the results. We have already written a letter to GU in this regard. We want this issue to be probed and an early solution to this.”

GU TO SET UP PROBE COMMITTEE
Meanwhile Pro-VC Mukul Shah said, “This time around 350 architecture students from two GU-affiliated institutes took the exam. It is difficult to say if there was a problem with the assessment procedure. We will constitute a committee to probe the issue. There is no question of bias.”

DEMAND FOR FAIR ASSESSMENT

In a related development, some Prosthetics (Orthopaedics course) students of B J Medical College have written to GU, alleging bias in paper assessment, due to which many of them have failed . They have spoken about this matter to the dean and also to M M Prabhakar, superintendent of Civil Hospital . Answer sheets are being re-checked. Officials have assured students fair assessment.
