The Commissionerate of Technical Education has asked Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC) to fill the vacancy of 1750 teachers in government engineering colleges before the new academic session begins in August.
These vacancies have existed for quite some time and the colleges have been managing with ad hoc teachers appointed from time to time.
Technical Education Commissioner T Natarajan said, “Looking at the vacancies in government colleges and the needs of the students, we have given the nod for the recruitment of permanent teachers. The process will begin soon.”
Sources in GPSC said the commission would begin the recruitment process by the end of this month. While 1300 teachers will be hired in diploma colleges, 450 will be offered jobs in degree engineering colleges.
While this is good news for ad hoc teachers most of whom are likely to be made permanent if they qualify the examination, a direct fall out of the massive recruitment will be on the private engineering colleges who do not pay their teachers well.
Many of the latter will also switch over to the government colleges, people in the know of things said. There are 16 government degree engineering colleges and 26 diploma colleges across the state in which 130,000 students are pursuing various trades. They suffer the most due to shortage of teachers.
Teachers, too, could not focus on research and quality education due to work pressure. Last year, the state government had admitted in the state assembly that, of the 1,389 sanctioned posts in just five engineering colleges in the state, over 49 per cent of the posts were vacant.
These were mainly teaching posts. The colleges were LD Engineering College, Ahmedabad; Government Engineering College, Dahod; Government Engineering College, Rajkot; Government Engineering College, Surat and Lukhdherji Engineering College, Morbi.
The worst hit was Dahod with over 64 per cent of the posts in the college vacant. Government Engineering College, Surat, followed it with 62 per cent seats vacant. At that point of time, 171 posts were vacant in L D College of Engineering in Ahmedabad as against the sanctioned post of 336 class I and class II posts.
These were mainly teaching jobs. Said LD Engineering Principal M N Patel, “Many teachers are overburdened due to shortage of teachers. This affects their upgrade as they are unable to attend workshops and training. This, in turn, affects delivery of quality education.”
