There have been complaints of some institutes flouting guidelines on admission to students from Gujarat
Students seeking entry into some premier engineering colleges in the state can breathe easy following a higher education department directive that admission to seats reserved for those from Gujarat be handled by Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC). The decision means admission to as many as 540 seats in Nirma University’s Institute of Technology, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University and Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology along with other engineering colleges in the state can be secured by filling in a single form instead of the separate forms that they had to do so far.
Each form used to cost up to Rs 1,500. According to officials in the education department, 50 per cent of the seats in these colleges are reserved for students who have cleared their qualifying examinations – classes X and XII – from schools in Gujarat. Until now, admission to these were handled autonomously by the management concerned based on AIEEE scores of the aspirants. As AIEEE is being replaced by Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE)-main from this year admission will be granted based on the merit of the students in the latter. Dr Hasmukh Adhia, principal education secretary, said, “For the first time, there is going to be a common entrance examination for all engineering colleges in the country.
This would happen via Joint Engineering Entrance (JEE)-main. So, it became necessary to bring in uniformity in admission process. As ACPC would now conduct entire admissions even in these premier institutes, it would ensure single window clearance and make things easier for the students.” Also, sometimes admission interview dates of two or more of these institutes clashed forcing students to make a difficult choice and cut down on the options available, said officials in the department. Now, students will have to fill in a single form, sold at nominal charge. Besides, students and parents have in the past complained that these premier institutes did not implement the quota system for Gujarat-based students effectively. They even felt that injustice was sometimes being meted out to local students. In one of the complaints, it was alleged that a student who was not actually physically handicapped (PH) got admission under the quota for such students. The government directive would resolve all these issues in one go, the official said.
