To bring down train mishaps, Railway Board has proposed to install high-definition camera on rail engines to provide drivers a clear vision of tracks much in advance. The decision was taken at a safety meeting held in June where the higher-ups chose Ahmedabad Division for trial run. The initiative is said to be the first of its kind in the country.
The input of high resolution camera fitted on the engine of trains will be received on the LED monitor placed in the locomotive pilot’s cabin. The trial was carried out on loco no 12412 WDG4 that runs between Ahmedabad and Gandhidham.
“The Long Hood Sighting Device provides locomotive pilots and his assistant a clear vision of railway tracks. The camera brings a clear sight of places which are far beyond the vision of human eyes. This helps drivers in decision- making and reduces the possibility of mishaps. The trial run took place between July and August,” Ahmedabad Railway Divisional Manager Rakesh Behal said.
The analysis of trial run indicates that the device is able to give prior indication to pilots about presence of signal or any object emanating or reflecting light at a reasonable distance of 500-1000 metre. The report has been sent to Research Design and Standards Organisation in Lucknow. The agency is likely to upgrade the device further.
“The camera will give prior warning to pilot about the location and also warn him about the approaching signal. There will be no visibility issue even at night or in extreme weather condition like fog,” said a source in Ahmedabad Railway Division.
“The camera will also record the entire footage. This can serve as substantial evidence in case of negligence or mishap,” the source said. The first conceptual trial has been able to meet the objectives with nearly 80 per cent accuracy, the source said.
