GTU to use technology for error-free results
Optical Character Recognition machines will make entry of students’
marks by scanning answersheets. It will not only check human errors, but
also save time
Keeping pace with time and technology, Gujarat Technological
University has decided to introduce “Optical Character Recognition”
(OCR) system to not only check human errors, but also reduce time in
preparing results. Set to come in use by winter semester, the OCR
machines will make entry of students’ marks by scanning answersheets.
GTU plans to purchase 10 OCR machines which will scan about 27 lakh answersheets. “The university had held a demonstration to check the accuracy of the machines. The machine scanned dummy answersheets of more than 100 signatures. But the result was found 100 per cent error-free. Results that took two months to be prepared will now take about two weeks ,” said aGTU official.
NO ROLE OF DATA OPERATOR
A few months ago, Gujarat board had unearthed a widespread marks-forcash scam in which about 250 students’ marks were tampered with. Investigation had revealed Nilpa Software Systems, which was hired to prepare the marksheets, took money from the students to change their marks in subjects they either flunked or managed to pass. Following the expose, Nilpa was blacklisted by the board. “Taking cue from the scandal, GTU decided to bring in this new system.
The machines will chuck the role of data entry operators and thereby nullify the possibility of any tampering with the marks. GTU, too, had roped in Nilpa to prepare results,” he said. Of 29 lakh answersheets, two lakh will be digitalised as per the new examination system at GTU. GTU VC Akshai Aggarwal said: “The new technique will eliminate the chances of any scam. We had conducted a demo and the results were accurate. We are planning to employ this system for 27 lakh answersheets.”
