A school that initiated steps to inculcate honesty among its students by conducting exams without supervisors claims to have succeeded in its attempts. Prakash School in Bodakdev had set in motion a novel idea after being inspired by Anna Hazare’s slogan, “If you want to end corruption, it should begin with you.”
About 15 days ago, the school conducted term exams for classes 6, 7, 8. Unlike every year when teachers supervise the exams, this year there were no teachers in the class. The teachers took roll call of the students appearing for the examination and after distributing the question papers left the class.
They only came back to collect the answer sheets. The purpose of the entire exercise was to make the students feel responsible and not cheat. The school has no closed circuit television cameras in the classes, though they have cameras on the premises.
Four monitors of the class were made to sit in the corners and jot down the names of students copying or attempting to copy from others’ answer papers. While names of six suspect students have been given to the principal, they have not indulged in copying, said school authorities. And therefore they were let off with a warning.
Hemant Shah, principal, said, “Both parents and students appreciated the initiative. We have the tendency not to trust children. However, when we did trust them, we received a positive response. The exercise only made them more responsible.”
He added, “Names of only six students who apparently made an attempt to cheat but did not, have come up. On the whole, all the students have done a good job. We trusted them and they have not let us down. We have been successful in our efforts to inculcate honesty among students. The project was introduced as part of NCERT. ” The school now plans to introduce the system in other classes as well.
