With admission to engineering courses just round the corner, an endeavour of six engineering students, a YouTube video, is a hit among BE aspirants for guiding them in choosing the right career option. An initiative of Vidhya Aarambh Knowledge Society (VAKSGUJ), the video helps freshers who often opt for a branch blindly without studying the course content and scope, and regret their decision later on.
One of the reasons of poor results in semesters, say video producers, is lack of knowledge about the stream of engineering students decide to pursue. “A majority of students do not have insight into the content and job prospects of their branch as they take admission without any consultation. Their interest drops when they find the subject drab. This often affect their performance and leads to frustration. Our video is a short introduction of various branches with employment opportunities in reference to global scenario,” said Jainik Shah, the brain behind the video footage. The video link of the footage is: http://www.youtube.com/user/ VAKSGUJ
“Many questions arise in the mind of the students regarding the branch, its exposure and scope. We prepared a questionnaire keeping in mind the doubts of students and parents. Thereafter, we made videos of experts in all disciplines of engineering according to the questionnaire,” he said.
“We thought of taking input from students. But who would trust students’ version? Therefore, we thought of interviewing principals, professors and HoDs of various institutes who would talk about the various fields in reference to subject matter, its plus and minus points along with its future prospects. We recorded their views on cellphone and uploaded the video on YouTube,” said Jainik.
Jainik got help from his college mates Khelan Dalal and Aakash Jain. Their team grew when Kunal Udani of LJ Institute of Engineering and Technology, Nikunj Shah of Indus Institute of Technology and Engineering and Ketan Chandarana of GTU Innovation Council joined them. So far, the group has uploaded experts comments on eight branches which includes mechanical, IC, computer, textile, plastic, EC and Civil. The rest 13 branches, say the group, will be covered in a day or two.

Cong sees red in AIEEE admission process
The state Congress on Tuesday demanded a single window system for admission to colleges which accepts AIEEE scores to prevent them making money by selling prospectus. The party said that PDPU, DAIICT and Nirma University have collected Rs 9.3 crore by selling their forms for Rs 1,200. National Institute of Technology, Surat, is the fourth college in the state that considers AIEEE grades.
“Four institutes in the state admit students on AIEEE ranking. But they follow their individual process which not only causes inconvenience to students but is also a source of wide-spread corruption. The institutes have made Rs 9.30 crore by selling admission forms,” said Congress spokesperson and student leader Manish Doshi. Till now, about 1 lakh forms have been sold. “We demand a joint admission procedure for these institutes. It will make the process easy for students and they don’t need to visit each college to buy forms and check merit list,” he said.
