After being made to move from door to door to gather data for the Census, egging on young adults and those left out to be enrolled on the voters’ list and carrying out other sundry assignments at the cost of their primary duty of teaching and grooming the young ones, now the teachers of municipal schools will have to also scout for kids for admission.
And if they don’t rope in 10 kids each by June 30, they will not get the annual increment due in July. So reads an order by the municipal education board assistant administrative officer (Hindi-Urdu zone). “Yes, I have issued such an order as teachers did not do a proper job of the initial survey of children who could be admitted to class I in municipal schools,” said Assistant Administrative Officer Satyendra Thakur.
Teachers of municipal schools are livid at the order and said it was just not done. Expressing surprise and disgust over the order a municipal school teacher on condition of anonymity said, “We are given some assignment or the other round the year. We try to give off our best. We tried to spot as many children for admission as we could. But if parents do not agree to send their kids to our school, what can we do? Issuing such notices is not justified.”
The municipal school board teachers were asked to carry out the survey as a part of Swagat Abhiyam. “The performance of most of the teachers was unsatisfactory. Most of them reported one or two students in their areas who needed admission. This did not match with our figures based on birth records,” said Thakur.
“We asked the teachers to revisit their areas for a proper survey. But they failed to do so. So the order,” he said.
Apart from teachers, MP, MLAs, IAS and IPS officers and other officials are part of the annual shala praveshotsav (school enrolment) programme of the state government. The function is scheduled for June 28-30 this time.
There are a total of 65 Hindi and 67 Urdu medium schools under the municipal education board.
When contacted, board chairman Jagdish Bhavsar said he was not aware of the order. “I don’t have knowledge of the order. I shall take necessary step after looking into the intention of the officer who issued it,” he said.
