Aghera is a third year B Tech student of PDPU
Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) has asked Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) to cancel with immediate effect admission of a third year student who secured a seat under Physically Handicapped (PH) quota in 2009 after it was found that he had been given admission “by mistake”.
The details of the case involving Deep Aghera emerged after a person named Ajay Mishra filed several RTI applications.
As per rule, only people with disability of 40 per cent and above are eligible for admissions.
However, Aghera secured a seat for B Tech (petroleum engineering) in 2009 despite the medical certificate issued by Civil Hospital stating he had 25 per cent disability.
The higher education department had then ordered ACPC to probe the case. ACPC member secretary M N Patel said, “We have thoroughly investigated the case. We found out that the college committee gave him admission by mistake. Going by the rules, Deep is not eligible for admission. We have issued a notice to the college and asked the authorities to cancel his admission with immediate effect.”
Mishra who sought information under RTI in this case stated, “It is due to PDPU’s mistake that an undeserving student secured admission under the disabled category and a meritorious student missed his seat.”
PDPU registrar Bharat Shah said, “Aghera’s name figured in AIEEE merit list for the physically handicapped. So we gave him admission. However, as per government rule, applicants with below 40 per cent disability are not eligible for admission.
“So, when we received an RTI application, we formed a committee to probe the case. The committee decided that the student should not suffer since he had already completed three years. But the ACPC has issued us a notice stating the student’s admission should be cancelled.
We are therefore cancelling his admission.”
