fter facing scathing criticism for poor results, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has now decided to adopt new teaching method for engineering students to make for an effective classroom learning.
The move is aimed at pulling students to the classroom and generating their interest in the subject by the use of innovative and interactive teaching methods. For the purpose, the technological varsity has tied up with Bhopal-based National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research.
The institute will introduce and train GTU teachers in new teaching techniques. “Students have been complaining that the current method of teaching is not at all interesting. Even experts shared the same views. So, we decided to bring change in our teaching pattern to sustain students’ interest. The Bhopal-based institute will provide us teaching aides like animation, videos, music and multi-media which will make the teaching-learning process interactive and effective,” said GTU Vice-Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal.
Unlike BEd or MEd, there’s no provision of training for engineering college teachers. Professionals after completing BE or ME take up teaching in engineering institutes. “They are qualified but teaching is not just about being competent. It needs efficiency to involve students, generate their interest and make learning effective. A qualified teacher is often ignorant of best teaching techniques. This creates a rift between teacher and student. An efficient teacher is the one who can pass on his treasure of knowledge to students and thereby ensure optimum utilisation of a student’s potential,” said Aggarwal. The university has also planned to arrange for the lectures of content experts on the lines of edusat.
