Students of M G Science Institute have taken the initiative to recycle urban solid waste. Micro Biology Department, in collaboration with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and students of CEPT, have started collecting plant litter, waste paper and kitchen waste from corporate houses and housing societies to decompose them on its campus.
To understand the concept, students visited AMC’s Pirana landfill site and learned the method to decompose waste. “We heard that AMC was carrying out the solid waste management at a huge scale. Therefore, we decided to be a part of this project, for which, our students visited the Pirana site to learn the techniques and handling of solid waste,” said Mrugesh Shukla, head of Micro-biology department.
Shukla further said, “The purpose of the project is to collect, treat and dispose of solid wastes generated by urban population groups in an environmentally and socially satisfactory manner, using the most economical means available. The students have already started collecting solid waste and decomposition process on the campus.”

AMC provides 22 dustbins
They have divided the solid waste into three categories: plant litter, waste paper and kitchen waste. Each of these areas focuses on the collection of different recyclable materials like office and computer papers from offices, kitchen waste from canteens, neighbouring societies and party plots, plant litter from MG and CEPT campuses. The students have asked universities, and corporates for their support.
“AMC is helping us in a huge way. They have even provided us with 22 dustbins to collect the waste. Sterling Hospital will be providing the students with hospital waste like papers and other materials,” Shukla added.
For crushing the papers, initially AMC will be helping the students. The crushed papers will then be brought back to the college campus for decomposition, he said.
B K Jain, principal of M G Science Institute, said, “This project would not only solve the problem of domestic solid waste disposal, it would keep the environment healthy and also provide organic fertilisers for farmers. In fact, now our students have decided to use only bio-degradable plastic. This is a huge transformation for the society as whole.”
