Gujarat Information Commission has warned Gujarat University to ‘exercise greater care and vigilance’. The stern statement was made with regard to an appeal filed under Right to Information Act-2005 by Hemlata Patel dated April 9, 2011.
However, Hemlata didn’t receive an appropriate response from the Public Information Officer at Gujarat University. Then, she filed an appeal to the Appellate Authority under RTI Act, to which no response was received. The applicant had requested for a copy of the report of the Local Inquiry Committee regarding affiliation of Ghantakarna Physiotherapy College, Godhra district.
Sources said, “When Hemlata didn’t get the answers, an appeal was filed directly with the Gujarat Information Commission following which the strict orders have been issued to those concerned at Gujarat University.” The statement also states that neither of the parties concerned have ‘acted as per their duty under the provisions of the Act’.
Several complaints against the university have been made for the insufficient details and late responses.

Prior cases
The State Information Commission has slapped a fine of Rs 25,000 on Gujarat University’s registrar for delaying the information sought by senate member Pradeep Prajapati in February 2008 under the RTI Act. The decision came on July 4, 2010.
