The new Passengers Reservation System (PRS) building at Sabarmati railway station has been awaiting a VIP for its inauguration for more than a year now. The new building, which was renovated and converted to PRS centre with a cost of 25 lakh, last September has been lying unused and the passengers continue to face problems with only two windows available for the passengers at the station.
The centre was developed to cope with the increasing number of passengers in view of development around the area. Already there is a proposal to make the station a halting point for more number of trains and make another terminal at Sabarmati railway station. At present between 800 to 900 reservation tickets are being taken from these windows every day.
“We have been seeing this new centre for last several months and are surprised why it has not been made operational till now. It seems senior railway officials have no time to make it functional,’’ said R D Harit a resident of Madhav Bungalows in Motera.
Without offering any explanation for the delay, Railway officials meanwhile maintained that the new Passengers Reservation System (PRS) building would be inaugurated soon. “The building is ready and the PRS here will be made operational soon,’’ said Division railway manager Rakesh Behal.
The claims of railway authorities towards improving the facilities for passengers however seem hollow, with conditions being no different at some other railway stations. In March early this year, new Reservation ticket facility was introduced at Asarva railway station.
However till now the separate reservation counter could not be made functional and the office of station superintendent is being used for the purpose. Reservation ticket units and computers have been stalled temporarily in the office of
station superintendent, with passengers seen jostling and pushing each other without a queue for. Visitors in at the station also rued that lack of counter, had made them vulnerable to pick pockets and thefts.
