GTU cracks down on colleges with poor facilities

Gujarat Technological University forms local academic expert committee to gather data on infrastructure, facilities and staff strength at colleges; gives them six months to fulfil requirements

Tightening its grip over colleges with inadequate facilities, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has formed a local academic expert committee which has been visiting affiliated colleges across the state to prepare a report on their infrastructure, facilities and staff strength. To make the report comprehensive, the committee has prepared a 20-page form to collect data.
“The data analysis has thrown up some shocking findings. Now, the colleges have been given six months’ time to fulfil the requirements which are mandatory according to AICTE norms. If the colleges do not comply with the guidelines, they will not be given permission to admit more students when admission process begins next year,” said a source in GTU.

Move to ensure quality education
Aimed at ensuring quality education, the move will check colleges that acquire permission from AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) but fail to update infrastructure to admit more students.
“After getting AICTE nod to admit students for first year, the colleges do not equip themselves to meet the rush of second year students. This is a hindrance in providing quality education as students have to compromise with various facilities. There are colleges which do not have sufficient faculty or adequate computers to accommodate more students in the lab,” the source said, adding that all colleges will be required to fill the form when GTU team surveys their premises.
“As the Fee Regulatory Committee has raised the fee for professional courses, there is no reason for institutes to put with poor infrastructure. It is the responsibility of colleges to provide students quality education as they now charge a hefty fee,” said the source.

Data collection
The 20-page form with 40 tables will help the team gather data on the institute’s building, area of construction, number of students, laboratories and libraries, books, journals, hostel facilities and many other parameters.
