School teaching is set to undergo a much-needed makeover as the state government gears up to start integrated BA/BSc-BEd and MA/MSc-MEd courses. The education department has set up the Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) to train young teachers in “skills, values and character”.
HSC-pass students aspiring to take up the integrated course will be required to send in their applications by July 7. Selected students will have to take an entrance exam on July 17 for admission to the course. A student can opt for either a four-year graduation course comprising eight semesters or a six-year postgraduation course consisting of 12 semesters.
The fee of the residential course will be Rs 50,000 per annum. There will be 100 seats each for BEd and MEd courses. All the subjects shall be taught by highly-experienced and expert teachers from national and international schools.
According to a recent report, of the 3,294 teachers in city schools, only 2,557 teachers hold BEd and MEd degrees.
“Our existing teachers are not up to the mark to achieve this goal. The prime need therefore is to impart value based education among teachers so that they focus on all-round development,” a source in commissionerate of higher education said.
The integrated course will include subjects like integral personality development, philosophy of value-oriented education, Indian culture, skill-oriented education, evolution of knowledge, fundamental duties, contemporary global world, philosophy of life and education. The aspiring teachers will also be taught French, Chinese and Spanish languages.
The source said, “During the vacation, if the student wishes he/she can work in government institutions or after completion of their study sign a bond with government institutes and serve them for two-three years. This way they will get remuneration for their services through which they can compensate the fees paid during their study. Their internship during four years of integrated BEd will get them an income of Rs 2.3 lakh income.”
The integrated courses have been designed by the National Council for Educational Research and Training unlike the regular BEd and PTC courses that have been designed by National Council for Teacher Education.
“The course provides a holistic approach to teaching. We aim to have teachers for whom teaching is more than a job. It should enhance their own personality and at the same time inspire and awaken the innate abilities of their students. We want to create teachers who are physically fit, globally aware and know much more than their core subjects,” said Prof Amarnath Maheshwari, one of the members of the course committee.
BEd students will also be trained in computers, shorthand, musical skills, engineering skills, story telling, translation and writing articles, organic farming, cottage industries and community service.
