GCERT exercises new syllabus
The syllabus is being tested in 566 schools in Bhavnagar, Surat, Sabarkatha and Panchmahals

The Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) is running a pilot project on new syllabus for Class 1 and 8 in 566 schools of the state.
According to Syllabus Reform Committee Chairman Dr Ravindra Dave, “We have been trying to identify changes that can be made in the syllabus to help give better education to children for the past two years. The new syllabus will be interactive and is a two-way communication system. Earlier, mugging was given the importance, but with the new syllabus in place, the focus will be more on learning.”
He further added that the new syllabus has been designed keeping in consideration four points — Experience, Reflection, Application and Constellation.
However, as of now the new syllabus is on a pilot basis and is being implemented in 566 schools in Bhavnagar, Surat, Sabarkatha and Panchmahals, said Dave.
MM Bhhat, GCERT Director, said, “The new syllabus has been implemented in 566 schools and will be launched in all other schools by the next year. There are total 34,000 schools in state. Currently, we are only revisiting the syllabus.”
According to sources, “The concept of the new syllabus is such that it will be will be beneficial for students throughout their lifetime. For example, personal chart of each student will be made, which will be passed on to his teachers. This chart will help teachers to understand their students better. It will be a constant evaluation for students.”
All the Class 1 to 5 of Gujarat medium will be running under the new syllabus by June 2012, while the syllabus will be implemented in English and other mediums by June 2013.
Feedback and suggestions from experts, teachers, students and parents will be helpful in making necessary changes in the new syllabus, said sources.

Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) is a pivotal institution at the state level for the enhancement of qualitative education at primary and secondary schools.
It was “State Institute of Education” before 1988. It was later upgraded as a SCERT in 1988, under the resolution of the State Education Department.
The upgraded SCERT, now named as Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training is a fully structured State level academic institution and is controlled and guided by a Governing body as well as an Executive Committee.
