Students can design their course at BAOU
OMKAR, an initiative of Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, allows students to personalise courses by offering multi-varsity module options, joint programmes

Keeping in pace with the era where everything is being personalised, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University has come up with a unique concept that allow a student to design his course by selecting syllabus of his subject from other open universities.
To implement the first of its kind of initiative, the open university has set up a web portal, OMKAR — Open Matrix Knowledge Advancement Resource, that offers aspirants multi-varsity module options and joint programmes. Once the other open universities will tie up with the Babasaheb university for the project, students will have more options to chose from and design their courses. However, the aspirants, who will opt for muti-varsities course programme, will get the degree or certificate from university they register themselves with.
Knowledge sharing
“Based on the concept of knowledge sharing, OMKAR is an effort to provide students an opportunity to decide their course material or syllabus by picking contents from other open varsities.
“In six to eight months, 12 universities will be connected to the portal. It will provide all info about all the universities which will have a tie up with us. Students don’t need to visit each university’s website to see its course material. Everything will be available at the portal,” said Babasaheb Open University vice-chancellor Manoj Soni.
The portal will serve as a resource centre from where students can access books, references and course material for free. “Those living in remote areas can access books through OMKAR. We are also planning to establish model centres with wi-fi connection,” Soni added.

OMKAR is a technology-enabled domain, constituting a repository of e-resources of information and knowledge. The domain is a dynamic platform that is compatible with multi-media convergence for a two-way communication of information and knowledge.
It is a step towards making the multi-institutional real-value virtual musti-media classroom and dialogue, accessible to millions of students and aspirants across the globe.
