Taking a serious note of the fact that the current syllabus of diploma engineering is not in tune with the requirements of the industry, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is conducting a survey to upgrade the curriculum.
GTU will be spending Rs 21 lakh for the survey aimed at assessing industry requirements and desired proficiency of the students. This will help them update the syllabus and supply quality manpower in sync with the current requirements of the industries.
The survey is likely to be completed by December and the syllabus upgraded by next academic year. Nearly 40,000 students clear the diploma courses offered in 27 branches of engineering every year.
The questionnaire will be sent to the heads of 10,000 industrial units across the state as well as the alumni employed there.

syllabus not updated
The last survey was held in 1995-96 by the Technical Examination Board with monetary help from the World Bank. The syllabus was last updated nearly 15 years ago based on the inputs given by the industries and alumni. Nearly 14 teams were formed to collect the responses from industry heads.
The questionnaire prepared by GTU will have questions regarding the usefulness of the current chapters, what new topics need to be added, modified or deleted.
It will also allow the industrial units to rate the diploma students they have hired besides coming up with suggestions and innovative ideas.
A senior GTU official said: “We were receiving feedback that the syllabus is not in tune with the growing demands of the industry.
The units were not apparently satisfied with the knowledge-level and technology-awareness of diploma students. That is the reason we decided to conduct a survey.”

Assessing loopholes
GTU faculty members have been given the responsibility of carrying out the survey so that they can better assess the loopholes in the syllabus and understand the requirements of the industry.
Based on the findings, the syllabus will be updated by January next year. Teachers will be given the necessary training and new textbooks and study material prepared. Gradually, the syllabus of the engineering degree courses shall also be updated.
GTU Vice Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal said: “We are conducting a survey among the industries to update the diploma engineering syllabus that has not been revised in a long time now.
“We need to know their requirements so that we can train our students to serve them better. This way industries will be immensely benefited and even students can aspire for good placements and better packages.”
