Fed up with saas-bahu serials that dominate the prime time? Here’s some relief for those of you who are academically inclined. Gujarat University will now come up with a lecture series on a wide array of topics for DD Girnar (Gujarati) viewers in 36 countries.
The university has been granted the 8 pm to 9 pm slot for the live phone-in programme that will benefit lakhs of students. To begin on April 9, the programme will be screened every Saturday and re-telecast on Sunday morning.
Two GU professors will speak on a particular topic every week. The programme will also incorporate audiovisual clips and animated short films. To make the show interactive, viewers will be encouraged to put forth their questions to the experts through a toll-free number. GU will be allowed to scroll information and alerts during the programme.
Students will receive the programme schedule in advance through email and SMS so that they can tune into the topics of their interest. Now, with the introduction of choice-based credit system, the show will help students prepare better for their elective subjects.
“Educational programmes are never screened during the prime time. But GU has chosen the slot so that maximum number of students, particularly those sitting for external exams, can benefit. Of the 5 lakh external students in state universities, nearly 1.8 lakh belong to GU.
Since these students do not attend regular lectures, the one-hour programme will be of great help to them. Students from private universities too can gain benefit out of the programme that will be informative and entertaining,” said GU Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi.
Doordarshan Ahmedabad will charge GU a nominal fee of Rs 12,000 for every one-hour session. A Rs 40-lakh studio and a radio station to be functional by December will further boost GU’s virtual education endeavours.
