Four students of Indus Engineering College in Ahmedabad have  received the Balashali Project to encourage Gujarati students to join the defence forces. The four engineering students — Sumeet Tembe, Adi Jain, Maharshi Oza and Dhaval Joshi — claim that their mission is to have a Gujarat Regiment in the armed forces.
As part of the project, the students will visit 25 colleges across the state between March 15 and 19 and encourage students to take up defence as a career. They will be screening the film Self Defence and Terrorism and also aim to interact with as many as 20,000 students from the 25 colleges.
They will also involve students of Gujarat Technological Institute, Gujarat University and NCC cadets in the project. Various speakers from the armed forces and other similar fields will deliver talks during interactive sessions as part of the project.
These include Yashaswini Tembe, MBA, managing trustee E plus Foundation; Dr G L Tembe; Air Marshal P K Desai; B L Kulkarni, Group Captain M G Mehta, defence PRO SWAC, Air Marshal A D Joshi; Commodore Suresh Chandorkar; Colonel Vinod Falnikar and Wing Commander Vijay Karnikar.

Common belief
“The common belief among Gujarati youths is that joining the defence forces means being deployed on the front and undergoing a tough regimen. This is because the media and films focus particularly on activities on the border. These challenging front posting may not be appealing to every student,” said Sumeet.
“Lack of awareness has restricted talent from getting into the defence forces. Our aim is to make them understand that defence offers a variety of career options in the field of engineering, pharmacy and other fields and the postings on the front are not the only jobs available. The salaries offered by the defence is attractive and the work too is challenging,” he added.

Needs awareness
Adi is confident that more Gujaratis will accept defence as a career if the usefulness in several fields is understood.
“It gives students an opportunity to contribute directly to the nation and also utilise their talent appropriately towards a patriotic purpose,” said Adi.
Maharshi and Dhaval said their aim is to have a sizable number of youth to form the Gujarat regiment in the armed forces.
“We aim to erase the feeling that Gujarati youths do not contribute to the nation. It is our firm belief that once they learn of the opportunities and the challenges involved, they too will go places in the defence.”
