In what should hearten Amdavadis who travel to Mumbai frequently, the railways is most likely to run Duronto Express from the Kalupur station every day. An announcement in this regard is expected to be made when the railway budget is unveiled later this month.
A demand for running this non-stop train, which currently chugs out of Ahmedabad thrice a week, every day was made last year, too. However, the request was turned down. Officials of Ahmedabad railway division say this time the proposal will be cleared because of two reasons.
“First, the number of people travelling from here to Mumbai has gone up sharply. Second, a leader from Gujarat (Bharatsinh Solanki) has been made the minister of state for railways, so proposals for new trains or increasing the frequency of existing ones from Ahmedabad will get a political boost,” an official said.
The Ahmedabad-Mumbai Duronto Express was launched in December 2009. In a very short period, it has become a popular train. Currently, it departs from the Kalupur station at 11.40 pm on three days — Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The railway official said that Gujarat might get at least seven new trains. Of these, five will start their journey from Ahmedabad.
“Proposals for starting Gandhidham-Mumbai, Ahmedabad-Bangalore, Ahmedabad-Chennai, Ahmedabad-Lucknow, Ahmedabad-Chandigarh via Palanpur, Ahmedabad-Yeshwantpur and Surat-Bhuj trains, among others, have been sent to the railway ministry,” he said.
A demand for running Kolapur Express up to Patan has also been made. Currently, it travels between Pune and Ahmedabad. “There is a possibility that the frequency of Gandhidham-Howrah and Ahmedabad-Puri trains may be increased.
Some other announcements expected during this year’s railway budget are gauge conversion for Ahmedabad-Mehsana and Mehsana-Taranga Hill routes; new line for Taranga Hill-Ambaji-Abu; double line for Mehsana-Palanpur.
Another official said that the plan for starting a train between Ahmedabad and Patna might be put off again. “A freeze has been put on many proposals because of shortage of funds. However, this year, we may see some progress on the plan for setting up a railway medical college in the city,” he said.
